Y.CO becomes first luxury brand to use single letter domain name, positioning company as digital marketing leader
Y.CO, a Monaco based superyacht brokerage and management company formerly known as The Yacht Company, has announced on September 25, 2013 that they acquired the valuable Y.CO domain name in an effort to reinforce their company’s position as a leader in digital marketing and innovation. Y.Co is now the brand name as well as the new domain name.
The new website address will now simply be Y.CO – migrating from the previous address of ycoyacht.com. The company is following other big industry and technology leaders that have purchased a one letter domain name to enhance their online branding initiatives, such as Amazon, Google and Twitter.
Charlie Birkett, Founding Partner and CEO at Y.CO comments “To engage with a client base that includes some of the biggest names in the tech world, it is essential for Y.CO communications to be at the forefront of technology. Our website is our most important communication channel and we are proud to be one of the first and only companies to have a web address that exactly matches our brand name.”
Y.CO announces the new website domain and branding initiative as the 2013 Monaco Boat Show begins, along with the introduction of a new iPad app that allows offline access to their yachts. The app is intended to better communicate with online and socially connected consumers.
The y.co domain was purchased from .CO Internet S.A.S, a company that registers the .CO top-level domain extension for businesses.
Juan Diego Calle, Founder and CEO of .CO comments, “Just as in the world of boating, there are yachts and there are super yachts; in the digital world there are domain names, and there are super domain names. By changing its digital brand from ycoyacht.com to the eponymous Y.CO url, one of the shortest and most valuable pieces of digital real estate in the world, Y.CO joins the ranks of a handful of the world’s leading tech titans, including Google (g.co), Twitter (t.co) and Amazon (a.co).”
Marine Marketing Best Practice
Y.CO is leading the superyacht and boating industry as the first brand to offer a single letter domain name. The move toward .CO and other new domain name extensions is becoming increasingly popular among brands that wish to distinguish themselves from the crowded .com market. These short, easy to remember domains can be a good way to build brand recognition.
